Eco | Magazine Publication

This magazine publication was assigned to further develop skills in typography. I was tasked with conceptualizing a magazine concept of my choice with both a feature and interview article. Typography and layouts were meant to reflect our concepts. To accomplish this, experimentation played a key role in the design process.

ECO is a modern, environmental magazine focused on climate change, global warming, and sustainability. It features an article highlighting raising global temperatures and its affects, as well as an interview with a professor of glaciology that speaks out about the effects of global warming and the need for change. ECO educates on the climate crisis and inspires people to choose a greener lifestyle.

Layout Experimentations

In beginning experimentations with different layout and grid options, one of my goals was to modernize scientific magazines and to create visual interest and movement throughout the spreads. After creating several test spreads, I began to use the text as a graphic element within the page to create visual interest. Both the feature and interview articles highlight rising and falling temperatures and melting of the glaciers. To represent this, I played with varying positions and widths of the text boxes to visually represent the rising and falling (step-like positioning of the text) and the glaciers melting (varying widths of text boxes) to promote movement around the page and create flow throughout spreads.
